Ha Giang, the road on the cliff
The limestone plateau on the Chinese border, the Ma Pi Leng pass, and the honest version of what four days up there involves.

What Ha Giang actually is
A plateau of grey limestone at 1,000 to 1,600 metres, where the soil sits in pockets between the rock and people plant maize in each pocket by hand. It looks like nowhere else in Vietnam, and the reason it is spectacular is also the reason it is poor: there is almost no flat ground.
The loop road that everyone rides was built between 1959 and 1965, largely by hand, and the section across the Ma Pi Leng was cut by workers hanging on ropes. That is not a marketing story; there is a memorial at the top and the people who did it are still remembered by name in Meo Vac.
What has changed in the last five years is the volume. Ha Giang went from a place with a handful of foreign visitors to a place where several hundred motorbikes leave the town every morning in season. Dong Van has hostels and coffee shops now. The road at 07:00 is busy, and the road at 15:00 on the southern return through Du Gia is still almost empty, which is why we ride it that way round.
Be honest with yourself about the crowds: if the idea of arriving at a viewpoint with forty other people ruins it for you, Ha Giang in October is not your place. Come in March instead, or take the eastern loop through Du Gia and Mau Due, which is 90 per cent quieter and 20 per cent less spectacular.
How many nights, and why fewer breaks it
Three nights on the loop is the minimum that works. Four is better. Here is the arithmetic that people ignore.
It is six to seven hours from Hanoi to Ha Giang town, each way, and there is no flight. A two-night trip therefore means two overnight buses, one full day of riding 200 km, and a second day of 150 km. That is the version sold on Hanoi's backpacker street for USD 90, and it is the version that fills the provincial hospital, because it puts tired riders on wet mountain roads in the dark.
With three nights you ride 105, 78 and 53 km on the good days and 112 on the way back, all in daylight, and you have time to stop at the Vuong mansion and the Nho Que boat. With four you add the Du Gia valley, which is the part experienced riders come back for.

The wet season is the one to take seriously. The problem is not riding in rain, which is merely unpleasant. It is that a landslide can close the road between Dong Van and Meo Vac for two days with no detour, and the only thing to do is wait. It happens several times most summers.
The other date to plan around is Tet, the lunar new year in late January or February. Markets close, many guesthouses close, and long-distance buses fill with people going home. The plateau is beautiful and half of it is shut.

There is no airport at Ha Giang and no railway. Everything comes by road, which is why the region stayed quiet for so long, and it is a real cost in trip days: budget one full day at each end.
On the loop itself, a motorbike is the practical vehicle. A car can do it, but the road is narrow, the passing places are few, and you will spend the trip reversing for trucks.

Ha Giang is cheap by Vietnamese standards, and cash is essential. There are ATMs in Ha Giang town, Dong Van and Meo Vac, and nothing between them. Cards are accepted at perhaps one place in ten.

When to skip Ha Giang
- If you have fewer than five days in total. Two of them are travel. A three-day trip to Ha Giang is really a one-day trip to Ha Giang.
- If you are coming in July or August and cannot move your dates. Go to central Vietnam instead, which is dry when the north is not.
- If nobody in your party is licensed to ride and you dislike being a passenger. Four days on the back of somebody else's bike is a long time if you are not enjoying it.
- If you want comfort. The best hotel on the loop is a clean three-star in Dong Van. There is no luxury option and there will not be one soon.
- If crowds spoil it for you and you can only come in October, which is the single busiest month on the loop.

Questions travellers ask most
Do I need a guide, or can I just rent a bike and go?
Legally, you need a licence Vietnam recognises either way, and most visitors' permits are not recognised. That is the first question, not the second.
Beyond the law: the loop is not hard to navigate and plenty of people ride it alone. What a guide changes is what happens when something goes wrong — a breakdown at 1,400 m, a landslide, a hospital that speaks no English. We are not neutral on this, but that is the honest shape of the trade-off.
Is Ha Giang better than Sa Pa?
For riding, by a distance. Sa Pa's valley is beautiful and the town has been overwhelmed by hotel construction; Ha Giang has more road, better road, and nothing on the scale of the Sa Pa development.
For trekking, the answer flips. Sa Pa and Mu Cang Chai have the better walking and the better village homestay network.
How cold is it in winter?
Dong Van in January runs 5 to 14 degrees, and the passes have had frost. It is damp and there is no heating.
It is also the clearest, emptiest and cheapest time to be there, and the photographs are better than in the autumn haze. Bring a windproof layer, real gloves and a buff, and it is an excellent month.
Are the markets worth planning around?
Yes. Dong Van's Sunday market and Meo Vac's Sunday livestock market are the two biggest, and they are working markets rather than displays — the livestock market in particular is loud, muddy and completely uninterested in visitors.
Both start before 06:00 and are finished by 10:00. Building your loop so that you are in the right town on Saturday night is worth more than any single viewpoint.
